B R Hills

Country: India

State: Karnataka

An interesting getaway from Mysore for nature enthusiasts is the Biligiri Rangana Hills popularly known as the B.R.Hills. Though these hills are famous for the ancient temple on top of the hills, it is also home to a lesser-known wildlife sanctuary.

BR Hills is about 120kms from Mysore. The hills are ideally located between the Cauvery and Kapila rivers. The lower hills are covered with rich deciduous forests that are home to a large number of elephants.

To visit the temple on top of the hill you can either climb the 150 steps leading to the temple or drive through the lush green forests. The temple is dedicated to Biligiri Rangaswamy and the temple is built in the Dravidian style. There is accommodation in the sanctuary in the form of Jungle lodges and resorts. At the K.Gudi (Kyathadevara Gudi) Wilderness Camp, you are in nature’s lap. The best time to get a good look at the wildlife is at dawn.

I enjoyed my visit there and I hope you all like it too.

Ma'am,

Super shots, actually I have made up my mind to definitely visit the BR Hills on my next visit to Bangalore where my sister lives.

By the way, this is Narasimhan Srinivasan from New Delhi, India. Apart from various places, I love visiting temples and tend to pay attention to architecture.

In fact, I thought I missed BR Hills by the skin of its teeth (ha ha) because I had taken a train to Mysore with the intention of seeing the Somnathpura and Melukote temples. After our train crossed Maddur from where two elderly gentlemen boarded, I started chatting with them and spoke about Somnathpura, they said it would have been better for me to get down at Maddur from where the Chennakesava temple was nearer. Nevertheless, I got down at Mandya, went to Malavalli for taking another bus on the rickety route to Bluff/Shivanisamudra. From Bluff, as guided by others I took another bus to KOLLEGAL (which I believe is very close to BR Hills) from where I went to T.Narsipur and from there to Somnathpur and then Mandya. As it got late at Mandya, I had to take the evening bus to Mangalore. Anyways, at that time I had faintly enquired about going to BR Hills, but was told that it could take about 4 hrs. to BR hills and that I will not get time to even return and see Somnathpur. So I changed my plan.

But this year betwee May and June I do plan to visit the BR Hills, especially the wonderful Ranganatha temple which seems (from your breathtaking shots) to have been built in the Dravidian style, but by the Hoysalas and seems very similar to the Melukote temple.

Which is the best way to reach these hills? Any idea of the tariff charges for stay for a single person or a family of four. Is the place closer from Maddur, Mandya or Mysore?

Kindly do get back to me on my email srirangam99@gmail.com so I can plan my travel better. Obviously, my first choice would be to begin travelling from Bangalore. My parents stay in Tiruchy and there is a rare chance that I may head for BR Hills from Erode/Sathyamangalam side in Tamil Nadu also.

Thanks and ciao....

I lived here for two months in 1996 and I still remember it fondly. The next time I go to India I want to visit the Dodda Sampige.

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you...
while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.

There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story.

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,An eternity in an hour.

Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.
